“Transformative Parenting: The Empathic Empowering Approach to Optimal Parenting and Personal Growth by Edward V. Haas MD, is a book that all soon to be parents should be given as a gift to read before the birth. Parenting is perhaps the most important work that one does in a lifetime, yet one receives no formal training. Transformative Parenting provides a thoughtful and thought provoking guide, framework, and perspective to parenting that if followed will lead to a parent’s better understanding of self and a better understanding of their child which should translate to better parenting and a healthier parent-child relationship.

I loved the book and wish I had read it just before I had my first kid. .. I will try to get my kids to read it before they have kids.”

As a teacher of young children, ages 2 to 8, and a parent, I found your book to be well thought out and true to my 38 years teaching experiences and 27 years of parenting. I found the common sense of it all quite refreshing! I could stand to read it again. I recommend it to everyone.”

I am beyond raising a child, my daughter was born in 1970, but I do have a beautiful 3 year grandson. Even though they live over 2,000 miles away, I thought that it is never too late to learn more about parenting. So I picked up and read Dr. Haas’ book Transformative Parenting. Wow what a surprise. Not only is the book very informative, it helped me to deal with my inner child, which needed a lot of healing. So in my opinion, one does not need to have children to benefit from Dr. Haas’ book.

A very real and heartfelt account of what it means to raise children with a healthy mindset. Haas raises our awareness to understand that connecting with your child and understanding that their lived experiences and context are not the same as our own is key. Empathy and active listening are critical components of parenting that are often forgotten in the day to day interactions parents have with their child. Haas provides a critical lens for thinking about the relationship between a parent’s connection with their young child and the impact this has on a child’s development, self-esteem, and modeling for healthy interactions. In the quick-paced 21st century world we live in, we can all benefit from taking the time to follow the suggestions presented in this book.

“This is a wonderful way of parenting and when I heard the video I could not agree more with your wish that people could be exposed to it before they parent. One association I had was of patients remarking over the years with delight how curious and happy their child was and of my saying – “ That’s you without the fear….” ..What I think translates wonderfully is the two-way process of letting your child in their innocence and enlightenment take the lead,of seeing life through their eyes. We hear patients tell us that raising their children helped redo their childhood.

..[Offer] Transformative Parenting as a Parenting Approach that optimizes growth, self-esteem and openness to life for parent and child. I think your Winnicott information is great. I wish we could give some inspiration and concrete skills to the parent who hears the baby crying but has no internalized good object to help them go from dysregulation to regulation so they could soothe the baby. How do we empathize with their fatigue or panic in a way that facilitates their empathy. Many will benefit from hearing you say that the baby is doing exactly what he/she should do and as parents as we get to know their cues and patterns we will get better and better at soothing them.”

“You have created a very interesting, self-examination book for us adults to consider to enhance our own lives before we make parenting and teaching our life’s intrigue. Learning how we think, why we think as we do and how to make healthy changes is probably one of the best gifts we can give our precious children. Thanks for a book that reinforces this very concept.”

I’ve read Transformative Parenting, by Dr. Edward Haas. I found the reading extremely practical, simple to understand, and in many ways original. The kind of book that any parent, pedagogue, and even doctor should read at least once in a lifetime.
